Class of 2025
Michael Bell –
Class of 2025
Clover Hill High School
Virginia Commonwealth University
Mechanical Engineering
Michael Bell graduated from Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield County and plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
In high school, he demonstrated strong academic achievement, excelling in math and science, maintaining a 4.4 GPA. Michael now carries a full course load within a rigorous engineering curriculum. He is part of the Rocketry Club, plays tennis and works out regularly. He also has been working a part-time retail job on evenings and weekends.
Since arriving in the United States less than two years ago after fleeing the war in Ukraine, Michael finds purpose in serving others. He volunteers regularly with the Ukrainian community in Richmond, supporting events hosted by Jewish Family Services, First Presbyterian Church, and local nonprofit organizations. At home, Michael helps care for his grandmother, who came from Ukraine, by translating at medical appointments and assisting with daily needs.
Michael aspires to contribute to the advancement of aerospace or energy technologies. He hopes to pursue a minor in aerospace engineering and apply his knowledge to the development of new types of engines or, alternatively, to help improve energy infrastructure by advancing efficient sources such as nuclear power.
Michael draws strength from his family’s resilience and the support of his community, and he views education as the key to building a better future.
As a Wassmer Scholar, Michael is honored to carry forward the values of perseverance, leadership, and hope embodied by Mike Wassmer’s legacy
Kerbie Latham –
Class of 2025
Hermitage High School
University of Virginia

Kerbie Latham graduated from Hermitage High School in Henrico County and will attend the University of Virginia, where she plans to major in biology on the pre-medicine track. A Distinguished Scholar with a 4.41 weighted GPA, Kerbie has been an active leader throughout her high school career. She served as First Lieutenant and Supply Commander in the Marine Corps JROTC program, while also participating in Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, HOSA, and the National Honor Society. She earned recognition through numerous academic and leadership awards, including the Military Officers Association of America Award and certification as an EMT.
Kerbie’s passion for service extends well beyond the classroom. She volunteers with the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, responding to emergency calls and caring for patients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. In addition, she works as a medical assistant at a primary care office, where she has gained experience in patient care from another perspective. These roles have deepened her commitment to medicine, teaching her compassion, responsibility, and resilience.
Kerbie’s journey has also been shaped by her personal story. Adopted from China as a child, she grew up navigating questions of identity while also living with microtia and atresia, a condition affecting her hearing and appearance. Rather than allowing these challenges to define her, Kerbie worked hard from a young age to build confidence and independence. Beginning with her first job as a soccer referee at age 13, she has pursued opportunities that pushed her out of her comfort zone and prepared her for leadership.
Looking ahead, Kerbie plans to continue serving patients through psychiatry. She is determined to approach mental health care with empathy and innovation, prioritizing listening and individualized treatment over one-size-fits-all solutions. She sees her education at UVA and beyond as the foundation for making a meaningful impact in a field that is undergoing much-needed reform.
Kerbie is honored to represent the values of resilience, compassion, and determination that Mike Wassmer exemplified and is proud to be a Wassmer Scholar.

In addition to managing household responsibilities, Morgan provided hands-on care and emotional support, lessons that deepened his understanding of human connection, empathy, and the fragility and beauty of life.
In the future, Morgan hopes to integrate his passions for engineering and the arts by pursuing innovations in sensory prosthetics while continuing his creative pursuits through poetry. He aspires to a career that combines technical ingenuity with human connection, building solutions that enhance life for others while exploring the depth of human experience.
